I find it funny when people refer to Return of the Living Dead as being less realistic as the NOTLD films. I mean, for christsakes, they are zombie movies! They are about as distanced from reality as you can get!

The thing about zombie films is that even if you can't act, have friends who can't act, know absolutly NOONE who can act, they can still play a zombie. And yeah, it's fun cause you get all messy, and bloody. You can incorporate guns, makeup and special effects (I.e losing your arm / head / whatever), and it can be done for low low budgets!
OK... I admit it... I've written a zombie film, which I was gonna film a couple of weekends ago, (but my mates let me down).
I didn't take the film itself seriously, it was about zombie stoners ("Dead Stoned" - E-mail me if you want a copy of the script), but I took the whole filmmaking process seriously as I would have done for, say, a homeless film.

<LI>I organised a Canon XL1 to shoot on, organised locations included an old army barracks and a graveyard, (located conveniently at the top of my road!).
<LI>I arranged for a makeup artist, a producer and a BOOM op!
<LI>I even went round town for about 3 hours trying to get a shop to lend me an arm off one of their mannequins (which I did!),
<LI>Tapes,
<LI>editing facilities etc... (Shame I was let down...)

It's not what you shoot, it's how you shoot it!
As long as you don't take the FILM itself seriously, I think it's a good way to start!
